Signals of the competition
The meanings of the visual and audible signals are. An arrow pointing up or down means that a visible signal is displayed or engaged. A dot (.) indicates a sound signal; five short dashes (- – – – -) indicate repeated sound signals; one long dash (-) indicates a long sound signal. When a visible signal is displayed over a class flag, fleet flag, race flag or race area flag, it applies only to that class, fleet, race or race area.
AP: No races started postponed. The warning signal is given one minute after this is given, unless the race is then postponed again or cancelled.
AP above H: Races not started are postponed. Further indications on the coast.
AP above A: Races not started are postponed. No more races today.
AP above numerals 1-9
A delay of 1-9 hours compared to the scheduled start time.
Indications of invalidation

N: All races started are cancelled. Return to the starting area. The warning signal will be given one minute after this is given, unless the race is then cancelled or postponed again.
N above H: All races are void. Further markings on the beach.
N above A: All races are void. No more races today.
Security
V: Monitor the communication channel for safety instructions (see Rule 37).
Rule 37: When the race committee raises the flag V with a sound signal, all boats and official and accompanying boats shall, if possible, listen to the race committee’s communication channel for search and rescue instructions.
Preparatory indications
P: Preparatory signal.
I: Rule 30.1 applies.
Rule 30.1: If flag I is displayed and any part of the hull is on the course side of the starting line or one of its extensions in the last minute before the starting signal, the boat shall, before starting, cross one of the extensions of the starting line and return to the full length of the hull on the side of the starting line before the start.
Z: Rule 30.2 applies.
Rule 30.2: When the flag Z is displayed, no part of the hull shall be within the triangle defined by the two end points of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before a boat is to signal her start. If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall be assessed a 20% scoring penalty, calculated in accordance with rule 44.3(c), without trial. A boat shall also be penalised if the race is re-flagged or re-sailed, but shall not be penalised if it has been postponed or cancelled before the start signal. If the boat is identified in a similar way at a subsequent attempted start in the same race, she shall be penalised a further 20% on points.Z
U: Rule 30.3 applies.
Rule 30.3: When the flag U has been displayed, no part of the hull shall be within the triangle defined by the two end points of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before a boat is to signal her start. If a boat violates this rule and is identified, she shall be disqualified without trial unless the race is restarted or re-sailed.
Black flag: rule 30.4
applies.Rule 30.3: When the black flag has been displayed, no part of the hull shall be within the triangle defined by the two end points of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before a boat’s starting signal. If a boat violates this rule and is identified, she shall be disqualified without trial, even if the race is restarted or re-flagged, but shall not be penalized if she has been postponed or cancelled before the starting signal. If a general recall has been signaled or the race has been cancelled after the starting signal, the race committee shall issue the boat’s race number before the next warning signal for the race and if the race is re-floated or re-sailed, the boat shall not be allowed to sail in it. If he does so, his disqualification shall not be deducted from the calculation of his series score.4

X: Individual recall
First substitute: general recall. The alert is given 1 minute after this is raised.
A: The track has been shortened. Rule 32.2 applies.
Rule 32.2: If the race committee indicates a shortened course (flag S displayed with two tones), the finish line shall be
(a) at a mark to be avoided, between the mark and the pole bearing the S flag;
(b) on a line to be crossed by the boats when completing the course;
(c) at a gate, between the gate marks.
The shortened course shall be marked before the first boat crosses the finishing line.
